Democracy is in decline. For the first time in modern history, the number of autocratic regimes has surpassed the number of democracies. In the past year alone, 45 countries have moved toward authoritarianism, while only 19 have taken steps toward democracy. Today, 71% of the world’s population lives under authoritarian rule. This dramatic shift signals the emergence of a new world order – one that challenges the global institutions built after World War II to promote peace, cooperation, and democratic values. Global Outlook 2026 explores how we can revitalize democracy and reimagine global governance for a more just and sustainable future. Program: 1. Saving Democracy in a Time of Monsters.
